Cockapoos are a first generation mix of a pure bred American Cocker Spaniel and a pure bred Miniature Poodle. Cockapoos can come in a variety of sizes depending on the size of the parents. In our case, all of our Cockapoos are between 20-25 lbs. This breed can also come in a variety of colors such as Black, Blonde, Red, Black and Tan, Party color and others.
Cockapoos tails are docked as it is unprofessional not to, and is a characteristic of the breed. Their temperament is loving, with the laid back characteristics of the Cocker, quieting the sometimes more intense energy of the Poodle. They are very intelligent and alert, yet have a sweet nature, patient disposition, and are famous for being wonderfully affectionate. |

A little history on the American Cocker Spaniel :
The American Cocker Spaniel also known as the Cocker Spaniel is a breed of sporting dog. It is different from the English Cocker Spaniel but closely related. The word Cocker came from their use in England to hunt woodcock, while spaniel is thought to be derived from this type`s origins in Spain. The first Spaniel in America came across on the Mayflower in 1620. This breed is the smallest of the sporting dogs recognized by the AKC. The first Cocker Spaniel recorded in America was a liver and white dog named "Captain". They are now well known for their sporting capability as well as being a great family pet.
Like most pure bred breeds the American Cocker can suffer from problems such as ear infections. Their very long ears cover and can keep water locked away without having a chance to dry. Also they can have heart problems and trouble with their eyes. Cherry eye is something that is quite common in Cocker Spaniels. Their weight is about 24-30 lbs full grown and they stand about 14-15.5 inches. |

. Their temperament is known as the Merry Cocker and their intelligence is ranked in the top 20. This breed, with good levels of socialisation at an early age, can get along very well with children, other dogs and other pets. They always have a wagging tail and prefer to be around people.
A little history on the Miniature Poodle:
Poodles are known as retrievers or gun dogs and are still used till this day by hunters. This breed was standardized in France where it was used as a water retriever. Poodles have a curly, non shedding coat and do not have that thick double coat that many breeds have and their fur is often called "hair". Most poodles are a solid black, white, apricot, cream, grey, silver, parti-colored or red. Poodles can come in a variety of sizes as well.
They are known as a hypoallergenic breed. The poodle has indvidual hair follicles and they have an active growth period that is longer than that of many other breeds. The tightly curled coat which slows the loss of dander and dead hair, traps it in their curls. Regular bathing and brushing keeps them looking at their best. As well, this can control the potent allergen "saliva" which some people (very few), can have a reaction to, even if they are not allergic to the breed. |

So as you can see the mixture of the Cockapoo really brings out the best traits and qualities of both these breeds to insure that you have a puppy that loves to be around people, has a longer healthier life span and is a quick learner. Breeding the first generation mix of the pure bred American Cocker Spaniel and the pure bred Miniature Poodle eliminates the hereditary problems that can be passed down through the pure bred breeds. |
